RUTLAND – George K. Prifti, 87, of Rutland and West Yarmouth passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 surrounded by his loving family after a courageous 9-year battle with cancer.
George's beloved wife of 48 years, June P. (Poske) Prifti, predeceased him in 1997. He leaves his much loved and devoted daughter, Marcelene J. Pratt and her husband John, also of Rutland, his two grandsons, who were the light of his life and of whom he was so proud, Jason T. Pratt and his wife Rebecca of Natick, and Adam J. Pratt and his fiancée Dorie Lynch of Keller, TX, and the newest member of his family, great-granddaughter Eliza June. George is also survived by his loving brother, James K. Prifti and his wife Dorothy of Worcester, and his nieces and nephews.
He was born in Drenova, Albania, the son of Kosta Dh. Prifti and Margarita K. (Dini) Prifti. He moved from Albania to Worcester as a young boy and graduated from Commerce High School and the New England School of Accounting. George went on to serve his country in the Navy during World War II on the USS Langley. He later worked as office manager at Worcester Hahnemann Hospital until 1964 when he became an owner of Worcester's CAPP Insurance Agency.
He was a member of St. Mary's Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church, the Son's of Saint Mary's, the Greendale Retired Men's Club and the American Legion Post 310 in Rutland. George was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Guiding Light Lodge & Scottish Rite for over 50 years. Additionally, he served on the board of directors of St. Mary's Church as treasurer.
George was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His family was always his number one priority; he especially loved spending time with them at his home on Cape Cod. In his spare time, George enjoyed bowling, going to the Greendale YMCA and following local sports teams, especially the Red Sox and Celtics.
He was a remarkably kind, caring and selfless man who will be dearly missed. He will be held forever in the hearts of his family.
His family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of the Hematology-Oncology Department at the Levine Cancer Center and the UMass Memorial Hospice for the excellent care and support given to George and his family during his illness.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 1st, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church, 535 Salisbury Street, Worcester with a burial following in Hope Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 31st, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A Trisagion service will be held there at 7 p.m.
