WEST BOYLSTON - Kermit Hatfield Jackson, devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, passed away at age 97 on February 27, 2025, at Oakdale Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in West Boylston, Massachusetts.
Kermit was born in San Francisco, California on August 17, 1927 to Larry Nelson Jackson and Helen Pearl Christansen Jackson. He spent his early years in Manhasset on Long Island, New York. Later his family took ownership of the Keswick Plantation in Powhatan, VA where Kermit attended St. Christopher's School. The family moved back to Long Island in 1943 and Kermit graduated from Manhasset High School in 1945. After a year at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, he returned to Long Island and married Priscilla Anne Rubens in 1951. Together they raised four children: Bonnie Kay Jackson Kestner, Glenn William Jackson (Cristina), Nancy Jane Jackson Rubens (Mihcael Gambordella) and Wendy Anne Jackson Savino.
The family attended the Congregational Church of Manhasset and retains fond memories of Church family camp vacations in Deering, New Hampshire.
Kermit and Priscilla moved from Manhasset to Laurel Hollow and then to Cold Spring Harbor and Huntington Station on Long Island. Later they took up residence in New Fairfield, Connecticut and shortly afterward in Newtown, turning old houses into beautiful homes at each stop along the way. They continued to relocate, living in East Swanzey, New Hampshire and later East Falmouth Massachusetts on Cape Cod. Seeking a warmer climate, they moved to Brooksville, Florida until after Priscilla passed away in 2011. Kermit moved to Worcester, Massachusetts in 2014 to be closer to family and lived in that vicinity for ten years under the watchful eye of daughter Nan.
Kermit utilized his carpentry skills to help Priscilla with her successful hand painted antique furniture and tinware business. He had a deep appreciation for Barbershop music and was an avid participant in Barbershop quartets and choruses wherever they lived. Whether singing harmonies or simply listening to Barbershop music, he found great joy in this pursuit. His passion for music was matched by his enthusiasm for tennis, a sport he enjoyed throughout most of his life.
Kermit cherished his family deeply and found great happiness in writing letters to his children. He had a lively sense of humor and wrote entertaining limericks and other forms of poetry. He taught daughter Bonnie to play chess and enjoyed word games such as Scrabble, Jotto, Crosswords and Word Search puzzles. He was proud of son Bill, who served in the U.S. Navy and later raised three daughters. Kermit's love extended beyond
people to his beloved dogs, who were constant companions throughout his life. Daughter Wendy was a great help in bringing canine friends to comfort him in recent years.
Kermit deeply appreciated the sacrificial love and kindness of daughter Nan, who looked after him meticulously for the last ten years of his life.
A man of faith, Kermit was a member of the Congregational Church of Manhasset, Spring Hill United Church of Christ in Spring Hill, Florida, and First Congregational Church of Holden, Massachusetts. His devotion to his spiritual communities reflected his commitment to fellowship and service.
Kermit's memory will live on through the music he loved, the words he penned, and the lives he enriched with kindness and humor. May those who knew him find comfort in the legacy he leaves behind.
Kermit was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Janice Jane Jackson Hinton, his wife, Priscilla Anne Rubens Jackson, and many friends and loved ones who were touched by his warmth and friendship. He is survived by his four children, six grandchildren: Charles Wiley Kestner II (Chris Brickey), Kristen Anne Kestner Maddux (Thomas), Kira Whitney Savino Henderson (Chris), Sarah Lynn Jackson Goersch (Brian), Kellie Anne Crizaldo Jackson and Deanna Kristell Crizaldo Jackson, and three great grandsons: Caden Robert Henderson, Asher Anthony Henderson and Brooks Levi Goersch.
A family memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Kermit's name to First Congregational Church Holden or Worcester Men of Song.
