WORCESTER/HOLDEN – Kathryn "Kay" R. (Skidmore) Welsh, 90, of Notre Dame du Lac Assisted Living, 555 Plantation St., Worcester, formerly a 43-year resident of Holden, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 in Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, after a brief illness.
She leaves her husband and best friend of 54 years, William R. Welsh; a son, Richard W. Welsh of Worcester; a daughter, Christina M. Gentile and her husband Michael of Rutland; two sisters, Phyllis Long of McLean, Virginia and Louise Tracey of Hopkinton; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Skidmore of Grafton; a grandson Brian M. Gentile and his wife Sarah of Worcester; a granddaughter, Brianna M. Gentile of Rutland; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Richard Skidmore, predeceased her.
Kay was born in Fitchburg on April 11, 1918 to Russell P. and M. Ruth (Welch) Skidmore. She was a graduate of North High School and attended the Hahnemann School of Nursing, both in Worcester. She worked as an LPN at Hahnemann Hospital, as a private duty nurse in the Worcester County area and at Holden District Hospital for 18 years, retiring in 1980.
She was a long time member of St. George's Church and its Women's Guild. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who always put her family first. Even as her sight began to fail, Kay continued to live a very active life. She was a member of the Gale Free Library in Holden, the Friends of the Holden Council on Aging in Holden and the Vision Support Group of Worcester. After moving to Notre Dame three years ago with her husband, Kay was a member of the Welcoming Committee, the Red Hat Society and the Chime Choir.
Kay's family would like to thank the staff at Notre Dame, West Wing, for their compassion and wonderful care.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 15th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The funeral for Kay will be held on Monday, March 16th, from the funeral home with a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. George's Church, 38 Brattle Street, Worcester. Burial will be private in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Talking Book Library, 3 Salem Square, Worcester, MA 01608.
