Judson 'Jay' M. Goodnow

May 23, 1927 — September 18, 2011

PRINCETON – Judson “Jay” M. Goodnow, Jr. 84, of Whitaker Lane, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, September 18, 2011 after an illness. Jay was born in Brookline, MA, the son of Judson M. and Marjorie N. (Needham) Goodnow and lived 84 years in Princeton.

Jay graduated from Cushing Academy in Ashburnham and attended the University of Massachusetts and Boston University. He was a licensed insurance broker of 35 years and was a partner with Huntington, Goodnow, Connors, Inc. in Boston, retiring in 1983. He served in the U.S. Naval Air Corps during World War II. Jay was a member of the First Congregational Church of Princeton, the Princeton Grange, Wachusett Old Time Skiers and was the Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 1 of Princeton for four years, and also served for several years on Troop 1’s Committee. Jay was an advocate for and instrumental in protecting and conserving donated land in Princeton, for Boy Scout Troop 1.

Jay was a 44 year member of the Boylston Lodge of Masons in West Boylston, and attained the 32nd Degree of the Scottish Rites Consistory. In his youth, Jay worked for his grandfather, Everett Needham, the Superintendent of Wachusett Mountain Reservation, assisting with the construction of the summit roads, viewing look-outs and the Needham pool, etc. His passionate pursuit of recognition for his grandfather’s service to the Commonwealth on Wachusett Mountain ended with the dedication of the Everett Needham Field House at Krashes Field in Princeton. Jay served on the Princeton Insurance Commission for many years. Jay was known for standing up for the underdog, and for his many acts of quiet kindness throughout his life.

Jay is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife of 60 years, Sheila H. (Hurst) Goodnow; four sons, Judson M. Goodnow III and his wife Nikki of Worcester, Peter H. Goodnow of Jefferson, MA, Tim Goodnow of Alpharetta, GA and Ted Goodnow and his wife Kim of Princeton; two daughters, Heidi G. Shaughnessy of Tahoe City, CA and Melissa Goodnow of Princeton; a brother, Robert E. Goodnow of West Boylston; 6 grandchildren; a great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews. A brother, Richard N. Goodnow, predeceased him.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Friday, September 23rd, from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. during calling hours. Internment will be private at Woodlawn Cemetery.
