WORCESTER - On Saturday, April 22, in a hospital room filled with flowers and love, Joyce Gewandter, 92, beautiful and cherished mother of Holly Gewandter and her wife Nancy, Howard Gewandter and his wife Marianne, and Hugh Gewandter, z’l, died after a sudden insurmountable illness.
The daughter of Jean and Harry Weisblatt, z’l, Joyce, who with her sister Marilyn, z’l, grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts, married her handsome high school sweetheart, Harold Gewandter, in 1950. Together they created a love-filled world for their family, and Joyce, a talented artist who imbued everything she touched with beauty, filled their home with art, antiques, plants, charm, and whimsy.
After Harold’s untimely passing in 1981, Joyce married Lewis Queen, and spent many happy years with him until his death in 2007. When they moved to Florida, Joyce created another beautiful home where her growing family, which now included Lewis’ children, Jeffrey Queen and his wife Mimi, Jodi Queen-Hubert and her husband Jim, and Robert Queen and his wife, Nancy, as well as her many grandchildren and great grandchildren, often visited.
A painter, sculptor, and interior designer, Joyce loved flowers, soaking up sunshine, and watching brilliant sunsets. She was captivated by clouds, the ever-shifting sky, the sea, and trees, both naked and lushly adorned with leaves and blossoms. She had her best time eating lobsters, getting silly drinking margaritas and dancing with her grandchildren. Most of all, she reveled in her family. And she was supremely gifted at showering all of them with her love.
Joyce’s legacy is her family. In addition to her children, she leaves her beloved grandchildren: Justin Gewandter and his wife Michelle, Shayna Gewandter, Morgan Rantapaa and her husband Alon, Haley Gewandter and her fiancé Matthew, Max Queen and his wife Jess, Alex Queen, Karen Stern and her husband Ben, Daniel Queen and his wife Erica, Andrea Rao and her husband Arjun, and Jon Hubert. She also leaves her adored great-grandchildren: Nathaniel, Benjamin, and Maxton Gewandter, Remy and Rowe Rantapaa, Sophie, Ruby, Lucy, and Owen Queen, Oliver, Mason, and Reid Stern, and Brie Rao.
A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, April 24 at 11am at B’nai B’rith Cemetery, 55 St. John’s Road in Worcester. Arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home of Holden.
Donations in memory of Joyce may be made to the Leukemia Society of Massachusetts or The Jimmy Fund.
