STERLING – Joseph R. Velletri, 52, of Swett Hill Road, died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, May 2, 2012.
Born in Morristown, New Jersey, son of Joseph and Marjoh (Williamson) Velletri, he grew up in Basking Ridge, NJ and later lived in Thomaston, CT. Joe graduated from Thomaston High School in 1978 and the Morse School of Business in Hartford in 1981. He has resided in the Sterling area for the past 25 years.
Joe began his career as a computer programmer at Sealed Air in Danbury, CT. He continued his career at Digital Equipment Corporation in Maynard which became a part of Compaq Computer Corporation. After leaving Compaq in 2001, Joe joined Cambridge Health Alliance in Cambridge, as an Internet/Web Engineer. Joe was the first employee hired for this team and spent his first year building the organization’s first professional-quality intranet. As the web development team grew around him, Joe continued to enhance the intranet, and to build many sophisticated, powerful applications. The tools that Joe built made a huge difference to thousands of employees and thousands of patients – improving the quality of their respective work life and clinical care.
Joe will be remembered for his intellect and his quick wit. He truly had a thirst for knowledge and had a keen insight into people. Friends and family remember his kindness and generosity. He loved his home in Sterling and the surrounding orchards, lakes, and open spaces. He worked closely with the Sterling Conservation Commission for the preservation of land. Joe enjoyed traveling to countries throughout the world. He particularly enjoyed his many trips to Italy with his close friends. Most of all, Joe loved his family. He was a dedicated son, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle.
Joe is survived by his parents, Joseph and Marjoh (Williamson) Velletri; three brothers, Bruce Velletri and his wife Laura of Groton, CT, John Velletri and his wife Dr. Diane Pope of West Hartford, CT and Peter Velletri of King of Prussia, PA; and his sister, Carolina Wilson and her husband Richard of Thomaston, CT; 9 nephews and nieces Robert Velletri and his wife Stephanie, Amy Velletri and her fiancé, Adam Novak, Amanda, Bryson, Haley, Nicholas, Alexander and Abigail Velletri and Jonathan Wilson.
His family will receive friends at 11 a.m. at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte.12), Sterling, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 5. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Sterling. Memorial donations may be made to the Sterling Conservation Commission, 1 Park Street, Sterling, MA 01564.
