SPENCER – Joseph T. Carey, 78, of Salem Street in Spencer, died at his family's residence on Saturday, April 9, 2005, following a long illness. He was the husband of the late Jeanne P. (Downing) Carey, to whom he been married to for 50 years until her death in 2002.
Mr. Carey is survived by two children, Stephen P. Carey and Deborah M. Sears, both of Spencer; a sister, Pauline Hasson of Plymouth; two grandchildren, Nicole Aucoin of Fall River and Danielle Aucoin of Spencer; and two great-grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late Robert Carey.
Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Thomas and Florence (Moss) Carey. He grew up in Hyde Park, and lived in Norwood for 25 years and had been a resident of Jefferson since 1997. He was a graduate of the Precious Blood High School and attended Newman Preparatory School, both in Boston.
During World War II, Mr. Carey served with the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1947. He was a bookkeeper and accountant with various firms throughout the area. He was member of the American Legion in Norwood and was an avid gardener.
The funeral Mass for Mr. Carey will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12, 2005, in the Holy Rosary Church, Church Street, Spencer. Burial will take place on Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery, Fairview Avenue, Hyde Park. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VNA Care Network Development Office, 120 Thomas Street, Worcester, MA 01608; or to the Spencer Rescue Squad, 6 Bixby Road, Spencer, MA 01562.
