Joseph Douglas Sage Phd

July 14, 1931 — May 15, 2023

Paxton - Dr. Joseph Douglas Sage, Ph.D., a beloved husband, father, and member of our community, passed away on May 15, 2023, at 91, in Colorado Springs, CO, in the loving care of his daughter Nadine and her husband. He was born on July 14, 1931, in Leonardo, NJ, a son of a fisherman and the eldest of five children.

JD was a man of unwavering principles and strong character. He put himself through college at Rutgers University as an officer earning a degree in Civil Engineering and continued his education at Clark University with a doctorate in Geology. In addition, he was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving his country with honor and distinction.

JD met the love of his life, "Pip", at 13 and eloped when he was 20. Together they had eight children and raised a family of seven in Paxton, MA, until Pip's death on Christmas Eve, 2015.

Dr. Sage was a professor of Civil Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute for over 35 years, specializing in Geology and Soil Mechanics. His love of rocks, art, and man's mark continued until his death. JD believed that "Art is the affirmation of being human." He wrote three books, cataloged and captured a lifetime of people and places through his photography, kept journals to record his experiences, created a collection of artwork in his studio, and had many solo and collaborative art exhibits.

JD was passionate about knowledge, academia, art, family, summers on PEI, traveling the world, culture, music, and dancing. In addition, he enjoyed playing squash competitively, golf recreationally, baseball, and being on and in the water. He was a man of many interests and talents, and his vast stories will live on through the memories he created with his loved ones.

JD was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Pauline Richard Sage, an infant daughter, a brother, and a sister. He is survived by his seven children, Joseph A. Sage, Denise Sage Seegal Darrow, Deborah Sage Kent, Peter T. Sage, Douglas H. Sage, Melissa Sage Elmer, Nadine Sage, their spouses, 11 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, as well as his sister and brother.

Services and burial for JD were held privately, and a memorial will be held in NJ at a later date. He is at peace with his beloved wife dancing once again. Arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. To share a memory or offer an online condolence visit the "Tribute Wall" on this page.
