Joseph R. Welsh

HOLDEN – Joseph R. Welsh, Jr., 77, of 1268 Wachusett Street, a life-long resident of the Jefferson section of Holden, died Sunday, May 21, 2006, in Saint Vincent Hospital after a long battle with asthma.

He leaves his wife of 51 years, Kathleen E. (McLaughlin) Welsh; two daughters, Patricia Welsh and her husband John Woodhull of Medfield and Kathryn Stiles and her husband Dr. Jeffrey Stiles of Dudley; a son, Joseph R. Welsh III and his wife Kathleen O’Donnell of Cape Canaveral, FL; a brother, Thomas Welsh and his wife Joan of West Boylston; four grandchildren, Nathan and Lindsey Woodhull and Erin and Emily Stiles; many nephews and nieces. He was born in his current home, son of Katherine D. (Wunderlich) and Joseph R. Welsh, Sr. He was a graduate of Holden High School and the Saunders School of Radio and Electronics, Boston.

Mr. Welsh was a licensed electrician who worked 15 years at Heald Machine Company. For 18 years he was manager of the Sterling Municipal Light Department and later worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Leominster. He was a volunteer firefighter for 30 years with the Town of Holden. He was an active member of the Nimrod League of Holden, the National Rifle Association and was a member of the ARRL.

The funeral for Mr. Welsh will be held on Friday, May 26, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, 1325 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 on Thursday, May 25, in the funeral home. Please omit flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association of Central Massachusetts, 393 Maple Street, Springfield, MA 01105.
