WAQUOIT/WORCESTER – Joseph “Joe” F. Lynch, 92, passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at UMass Memorial Healthcare – University Campus after an illness. He was born in Haverhill, the son of Michael F. and Mary (Kennedy) Lynch and had lived in Waquoit, Cape Cod for 37 years before moving to Worcester in 2018.
After graduating from St. James high school, Joe enlisted into the service in 1945 and proudly served in the US Navy as a Yeoman 3rd Class. Following his service to his country, he continued his education and graduated from Bryant Stratton Business School in Boston with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Business. He married his high school sweetheart, Geraldine E. Tondi in 1951 before embarking upon a distinguished 30-year career with the Central Intelligence Agency serving his country in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and East Africa. He continued to work for the agency after retirement as a recruiter, a job he thoroughly enjoyed.
Avid golfers, Joe and Gerry retired to Waquoit, Cape Cod in 1979. He pursued his passion at Cummaquid Golf Club where he served as chairman for their Centennial Celebration in 1985. He was also an active member of the Waquoit Bay Yacht Club, the Association for the Protection of Waquoit Bay and was a member of Christ the King Church in Mashpee. Joe was the center of our extended family, hosting family and summer gatherings where he captivated us around the dinner table with many stories from his colorful career.
He leaves his beloved wife of 68 years, Geraldine E. (Tondi) Lynch; two sons, Michael J. Lynch and his wife, Christine of Sacramento, CA and Mark J. Lynch and his wife, Peg of Pawtuxet, RI; his daughter, Maureen Lowell and her husband, Robert; two brothers, Robert Lynch of Haverhill and John Lynch of Lynnfield; four grandchildren, Courtney and Kelsey Lynch and Katherine and Christopher Lowell; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Daniel Lynch.
Funeral services for Joseph will be held on Monday, June 15th with an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant Street, Worcester. A private committal service will be held at St. James Cemetery in Haverhill. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
