RUTLAND – Joseph C. Kaminski, 84, of Rutland and formerly of Upland Street, Worcester, died peacefully in his home on Thursday, May 5, 2005, after a battle with cancer.
He leaves his wife of 59 years, Irene J. (Prusko) Kaminski; his daughter, Paula J. Stidsen and her husband Brian E. of Rutland. His daughter, Linda M. Courtney wife of David M. Courtney, died in 2003. He also leaves his brother, Raymond Kaminski of Northbridge; a sister, Helen DiPasquale of Worcester; eight grandchildren, Jessica Courtney of Leicester, Devon, Morgan and Rhiannon Courtney of Worcester, Leah, Seth, Zachary and Nathaniel Stidsen of Rutland; and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Worcester, son of Roch and Katarzyna (Perlowski) Kaminski. He graduated from Commerce High School, Class of 1939, where he played football, basketball and ran track. He was a sports editor for the Commerce Mercury school paper.
Mr. Kaminski was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II serving as a Drill Instructor at the marine base at Parris Island, South Carolina. He fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima with the 3rd Marine Division and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was past commander of the American Legion Post 318 in Worcester and a life member of the Polish American Veterans of World War II. He was a Worcester Firefighter for 28 years, retiring in 1978. He served 10 years at the former Ladder 3 and 18 years at the former Hose 6 and Engine 15. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church.
The funeral for Mr. Kaminski will be held on Monday, May 9, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 290 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Entombment will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, 162 Webster Street, Worcester. Calling hours are from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 8, in the funeral home.
