Jon G. Holmes, 79, died peacefully at home on Friday, June 27, 2014 with his loving children at his bedside. Jon was born in Worcester, son of the late John F. and Ella M. (Siart) Holmes. He graduated from Holden High School and earned a degree in electromechanical engineering from Boston College. He lived in Rutland for many years before moving to Holden more than 25 years ago.
Following his college graduation, Jon began his work career with the Barre Wool Combing Company, where he worked for 15 years. He then joined Norton Company in Worcester where he worked in the central engineering department, retiring in 1992. Jon loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed many years of membership with the Norco Sportman’s Club of Princeton. Recently, Jon spent his free time raising pheasants at home. He truly enjoyed all his relationships with his friends, but was most fond of the time he spent with his children and grandchildren.
Jon was predeceased by his first wife, Arline D. (Kampe) Holmes in 1979. He then married the former Donna M. Healey, who passed away in December of 2011. Jon leaves his four children, Brenda M. Fass-Holmes and her husband, Barry of San Diego, CA, Glen A. Holmes and his wife, Lila of Charlton, Debi J. Holmes of Rutland and Karen L. Votruba and her husband, Julian of Oakham; his two brothers, James Holmes of Webster and Harry Holmes of Montgomery, AL; his sister, Claudia Creamer of Templeton; his five cherished grandchildren, Michael, Nicholas and Arline Votruba, Stephen Hall and Lauren Holmes; as well as nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jon’s family on Monday, June 30 from 5-7 p.m. in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. A service honoring and celebrating his life will be held on Tuesday, July 1 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home, with burial following in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Saint Vincent Hospital, Pulmonary Care Unit, 123 Summer Street, Worcester, MA 01608.
