HOLDEN - John P. Dufault, Ph.D., 81, of Salisbury Street, passed away peacefully in his home under the loving care of his family and VNA Care Hospice on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, with his wife of 58 years, Lucille A. (DesRochers) Dufault by his side.
He was born Jean Pierre Dufault in Gardner on September 8, 1929, son of Dr. Francis X. and Lina Leclair (Thibault) Dufault, and lived in Holden for over 50 years. He was a graduate of Assumption Preparatory School and received a Bachelor's degree from Assumption College, Master's degree from UMass Amherst and a Ph.D. from Boston College. He had a long career as an educator working at several Massachusetts colleges most notably Assumption College and Fitchburg State College, retiring as Chairman of the Behavioral Sciences Department in 1989.
John was a past member of the Wachusett Regional School Committee, member of St. Mary's Church, and was active with the Assumption College Alumni Association. He cherished time with his family at the "camp" in Wilbraham and his cottages in South Harwich. He enjoyed building and woodworking, camping and traveling, the Tuesday night bridge club, sports, and performing in community theatre.
Besides his wife he will be greatly missed by his five sons, Peter J.G. Dufault and his wife Janet Glenn of Pepperell, Matthew J. Dufault and his wife Kathleen of Holden, Andrew J. Dufault of Brooklyn, New York, Thomas J. Dufault and his wife Elizabeth Brennan of Rutland and Michael J. Dufault and his wife Noelle LeChevalier-Dufault of Hudson Falls, NY; two brothers, Dr. Francis X. Dufault, Jr. and his wife Loraine of Worcester and Dr. Charles E. Dufault and his wife Christine of Switzerland; a sister-in-law, Norma Dufault of Shrewsbury; 8 grandchildren, Eric, David, Anne, Patricia, John, Daniel, Catherine and Julia; and nephews and nieces. A son, Mark J. Dufault, a daughter, Michelle "Mimi" Dufault, and two brothers, Paul E. and Claude B. Dufault, predeceased him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 25th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 26th, in St. Mary's Church, 114 Princeton St., Jefferson. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
John was a Type 1 Diabetic living 66 years with the condition, and honoring his wishes the family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Joslin Diabetes Center, One Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215.
