John T. O'Malley

STERLING – John T. O’Malley, 97, of Sterling, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 8, 2014 under the loving care of his family and the staff at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester. Born and raised in Clinton, John was the son of John T. and Hannah T. (McNamara) O’Malley and lived in Worcester before moving to Sterling in 1960.

His beloved wife of 65 years, Helen (Maki) O’Malley, died in 2011. He is survived by his two sons, John E. O’Malley and his wife, Pamela of Holden and Richard P. O’Malley of Phillipston; two grandchildren, Richard O’Malley and his wife, Leigh of Winchendon and Jeffrey O’Malley of Phillipston; and a great-grandson, Killian O’Malley. Besides his wife, John is predeceased by a son, Brian T. O’Malley.

John graduated from Clinton High School, Bentley School of Accounting and Worcester Polytechnic Institute School of Industrial Management. He furthered his education by returning to Bentley College where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and his MBA from Anna Maria College in 1978.

He was director of fiscal services and controller at the former Holden District Hospital where he worked for 22 years retiring in 1988. Previously, John was an accounting manager at Mechanics Bank in Worcester and the controller at Wain-Roy Corp. in Fitchburg. He was also an adjunct professor in the continuing education divisions at both Bentley and Anna Maria Colleges.

John was a past president of the National Office Management Association’s Worcester Chapter and the National Association of Accountants. He organized and was the first president of the Bentley College Alumni Association. He was also a founding member and permanent chair of the Central Massachusetts Hospital Finance Council, and served as a director and a recipient of “The Follmer and Reeves Award” of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Healthcare Financial Management Association. He was a longtime member, trip leader and former president of the Greendale Retired Men’s Club in Worcester.

He’s the author of several financial manuscripts published in the National N.A.A. bulletins, one of which won the Lybrand Award in 1961. He enjoyed a lifetime of skiing and will be remembered for his ribald sense of humor and energetic nature.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with John’s family from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, December 12, at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd., followed by a funeral service honoring his life at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Sterling.
