WEST BOYLSTON – John W. McCarthy, 71, formerly of Sterling, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 20, 2018 under the loving care of his family and the compassionate staff at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. Born and raised in Fitchburg, John was the son of the late William J. and Elise “Elsie” R. (Belliveau) McCarthy, and lived 34 years in Sterling before moving to West Boylston in 2010.
John graduated from Fitchburg State College in 1968 and later received a graduate degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He taught high school chemistry and physics at West Boylston High School from 1968 to 1980. After retiring from teaching, John worked 20 years in computer field support for State Mutual Life Assurance Co. in Worcester.
He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife of 50 years, Alice M. (Rufiange) McCarthy; a son, Sean M. McCarthy and his wife, Lisa M. Rinaldi of Holden; a daughter, Kerry A. Mojica and her husband, Benjamin of Auburn; a brother, Francis L. McCarthy and his wife, Doris of Fitchburg; four grandchildren, Daniel and Maria Mojica, and Ian and Aidan McCarthy; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with John’s family from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, December 29, at Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling, followed by a service honoring his life at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
