PAXTON – John Joseph Dears, 94, formerly of Rutland and Worcester, died Saturday, January 14, 2006, in the St. Francis Home, after a brief illness.
His wife of 45 years, Mary A. (Witham) Dears, died in April of 2001. He leaves his daughter, Michelle A. Donohue and her husband Patrick with whom he lived. He was born in Provincetown, son of Joseph and Mabel (Fotado) Dears, and lived in Rutland and several years in Worcester and Paxton. He was a graduate of Provincetown High School. He was a proud Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the U.S.S. Tuscaloosa and the U.S.S. Walker in the European theater, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Mr. Dears worked for 20 years for the Massachusetts Highway Dept. He was a founding member of the Provincetown V.F.W. and a member of the Tin Can Sailors Association. He was a watercolorist and an avid fisherman.
The funeral Mass for Mr. Dears will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 18, in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main Street, Worcester. Burial will be private in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Alden Street, Provincetown. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 17, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Our Lady of the Angels Church Building Fund, 1222 Main Street, Worcester, MA 01603.
