STERLING – John J. Hehir, 68, of Tanglewood Road, died at home in the presence of his loving family on Thursday, May 3, 2012, after an illness. Born and raised in Worcester, he was the son of Thomas H. and Grace (Goeckeler) Hehir and lived 40 years in Sterling.
John graduated from North High School in Worcester where he was a varsity hockey letterman. He also attended Worcester Industrial Technical Institute. He began his career in 1968 with New England Telephone Co. and retired as a manager with Verizon in 1994. He honorably served his country during the Vietnam War with the United States Navy aboard the USS Charles S. Sperry (DD-697).
He was a member of Eight Point Sportsmen’s Club, the Hiram O. Taylor American Legion Post 189, and St. Richard of Chichester Church, all in Sterling, where he also served on the Planning Board.
He was an avid New England sports fan who loved fishing and hunting. His family was the joy of his life and they spent 20 years vacationing at Moody Beach in Maine. He will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. His perseverance and courage during his illness was admired by all who knew him. Throughout the last two years he found strength in the care and presence of his grandchildren whom he adored.
He is survived and will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 44 years, Julie T. (Salmon) Hehir; three sons, Mark P. Hehir and his wife Jennifer of Paxton, Kevin F. Hehir of Lexington and Daniel J. Hehir and his close companion Andrea Jepson of Sterling; a daughter, Megan E. Marshall and her husband James of Sterling; a brother, William Hehir of Worcester; four sisters, Patricia Wickham of Manchester, NJ, Kathleen Dagle of Worcester, Carol Quinn of Shrewsbury and Judith Donnellan of Centerville; seven grandchildren, Andrew, John, Joseph, Gracie, Jack, Sydney and William; many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his siblings, Grace Ethier, Mary Sullivan and Robert Hehir.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 7, at St. Richard of Chichester Church, 4 Bridge Street, Sterling followed by interment at Hillside Cemetery, Clinton Road (Rte. 62), Sterling. Donations in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Town of Sterling Fire Department, Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 515 or to the Sterling Firefighters Association, P.O. Box 1081, Sterling, MA 01564.
