WORCESTER – John D. Hamilton, 94, of Worcester, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 under the loving care of his family and the staff of the Jewish Healthcare Center in Worcester. Born in Glasgow, Scotland and raised in Manchester, CT, John was the son of James and Isabelle (Drawbell) Hamilton, and lived in Worcester, MA for 53 years.
He attended the University of Connecticut and graduated from Syracuse University. From 1942 to 1945, John honorably served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. He later reenlisted in the Army and served as a Lieutenant with the Signal Corps during the Korean War. In 1944, John married the love of his life, Brenda SM Habbit, who was herself, serving in the United States Coast Guard. After being honorably discharged in 1953, they moved to Pittsburgh and later Erie Pennsylvania where John worked in sales at the Erie Insurance Exchange and taught at Gannon College. In 1962, John and his family moved to Worcester, MA where John continued his insurance career and went to work for Worcester Mutual Insurance Companies where he served as Vice President. He joined Shelby Mutual as Resident Vice President of its Braintree, MA office. Upon retiring from Shelby Mutual, he joined the H. A. Daniels Insurance Agency, Milford, MA. He also was a member of the Advisory Board of Directors of McGrath Insurance Group, Sturbridge, MA.
John was a founding member and former President of the Worcester County Chapter of the CPCU Society, and a member of the New England 1752 Club. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester, MA.
John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be remembered for his gentle strength, wisdom, intellect and wit.
His beloved wife of 71 years, Brenda S.M. (Habbit) Hamilton died September 29th of this year. He leaves his son, Kent G. Hamilton and his wife, Linda, of Simi Valley, CA; his daughter, Shelley A. McKiernan and her husband, Terence J. of Holden; a sister, Ella Jean and her husband, Ervin E. Bernotus of Florida; three grandchildren, Sean P. McKiernan, Brice R. and Ian S. Hamilton; nephews, nieces, and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert G. Hamilton, and James I. Hamilton.
Funeral services were held privately in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden, MA. Interment was in All Faiths Cemetery in Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holden Senior Center, 1130 Main Street, Holden, MA 01520, or Trinity Lutheran Church, 73 Lancaster Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
