RUTLAND – John H. Griffin, 87, passed away on Friday, April 24, 2015 at Holden Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after an illness.
He is survived by a niece, Kelly Robinson and her husband, Patrick of Rutland; two nephews, Dirk Griffin and his wife, Tami of Frederick, MD and Glenn Griffin and his wife, Niki Johnson of Uniontown, OH; and two grand nieces, Georgia and Cecilia Griffin. He was predeceased by three brothers, George, Carl and Clarence Griffin and a sister, Catherine Griffin.
John was born in Worcester on May 27, 1927, the son of Carl R. and Margaret (Rice) Griffin and graduated from Rutland High School in 1945. He was drafted into Army Air Corps during World War II and served with the 45th Air Base Supply Squadron. John was a self taught artist and worked at the Worcester Telegram and Gazette for 20 years before retiring. Previously, he worked 20 years at a local paint company. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Rutland and the Rutland American Legion Post 310 and will be fondly remembered as the Worcester Telegram and Gazette “Santa” for many years.
Funeral services for Mr. Griffin will be held on Wednesday, April 29, with a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick’s Church, 258 Main Street, Rutland. A private committal service will be held at a later date at West Cemetery in Rutland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick’s Church, P.O. Box 939, Rutland, MA 01543. Arrangements are under the care of the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
