WORCESTER - John F. Scott, Ph.D., 80, a noted local psychologist died Thursday, October 16, 2008, at Notre Dame Long Term Care Center after a long illness.
He leaves his loving wife of 56 years, Millicent Paterson Scott of Holden; his children, Linda Scott and daughter-in-law Rebecca Sherer of Northampton and Angela Scott Henderson, son-in-law David Henderson, and granddaughter Carly Henderson of Avon, CT. He was born in Philadelphia, PA. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1945-1947. He received a BA from New York University, an MSW from Boston University, and a Ph.D. from Brandeis University.
Dr. Scott was affiliated with the Worcester Youth Guidance Center starting in 1953 and served as the Director from 1968-1985. In addition, he was the first chairman of the Worcester Human Rights Committee from 1968-1970; a consultant to the Worcester Police Department Training Academy from 1953-1986 and active in many civic organizations. He had a private psychology practice in Worcester for over 50 years.
He was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry UMASS Medical School; an Attending Psychologist at Saint Vincent Hospital; a former Associate Professor of Mental Health at Heller Graduate School, Brandeis University; and former Assistant Professor of Sociology at the College of the Holy Cross. He was a noted lecturer on community mental health topics and clinical hypnosis. He received numerous awards and honors including Martin Luther King Scholarship Foundation Citizenship Award, the Junior Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Young Man of 1962, and the Bardwell H Flower Award.
He loved his family and work, bicycle riding and dogs. He was a gentle caring man who will be missed by all.
Calling hours will be held from 6-8 PM on Friday, October 24, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 25, at 2:00 PM in All Saints Church, 10 Irving Street, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the YMCA, 1724 Christian Street, Philadelphia, PA 19146; Notre Dame LTC, 559 Plantation Street, Worcester, MA 01605; or a charity of your choice.
