John 'Jay' F. Queeney

March 25, 1945 — November 16, 2017

STERLING – John F. “Jay” Queeney, 72, passed away peacefully at home with his wife and family by his side on Thursday, November 16, 2017, after a courageous nine-year battle with cancer. Born and raised in Clinton, Jay was the son of the late Gerald J. and Doris (Brennan) Queeney and lived the last 48 years in Sterling.

He attended St. John’s Elementary School and was a member of the Clinton High School Class of 1963. Jay honorably served his country during the Vietnam era in the United States Navy from 1963 to 1966 and remained in the Naval Reserves for several years. On February 25, 1967, Jay married the love of his life, Lancaster native Pamela G. Pratt. They briefly lived in Lancaster before settling in Sterling on the shore of East Lake Waushacum where they raised their two children, Tammi and Patrick.

Jay worked over 30 years for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation as a District 4 Warehouse and Snow & Ice Manager. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge, a longtime member of the VFW and the PAV, all in Clinton. He was also a member of the Eagles Club and the Franco American Club, both in Leominster.

Jay enjoyed boating, fishing, playing cards, and golf. Jay’s children fondly remember spending time with their Dad at the lake with friends and family whom he always welcomed into his home. First and foremost, Jay cherished spending time with his family, particularly his grandson, Sean, who brightened his world. He was proud of his Irish heritage and will be remembered for his generous, loving, and quick-witted nature.

He will be affectionately remembered and missed by his beloved wife of 50 years, Pamela G. (Pratt) Queeney; his son, Patrick M. Queeney and his fiancé, Tricia Hammond of Albuquerque, New Mexico; his daughter, Tammi A. and her husband, John S. Wolfenberger of Bethlehem, New Hampshire; two brothers, Gerald Queeney of Sterling and Wayne Queeney of Clinton; a sister, Barbara Deantonis of Clinton; his grandson, Sean M. Wolfenberger; and his beloved dog, Tipperary. Besides his parents, Jay is predeceased by a brother, Paul Queeney.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jay’s family from 5 to 7 p.m on Monday, November 20, at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd., Sterling. A funeral service honoring his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21, at the funeral home. Interment will take place privately at Hillside Cemetery in Sterling at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HealthAlliance Home Health and Hospice, 60 Hospital Rd., Leominster, MA 01453.
