John A. Cammuso

WORCESTER – John A. Cammuso, 87, got his angel wings on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 surrounded by his family.

He leaves his wife of 62 years, Carol (McSheehy) Cammuso; his sons, Paul and his wife, Katherine of Rutland, Jeffrey and his wife, Laurie of Worcester and Mark and his wife, Ruth of Worcester. He leaves eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; and his brother, Richard Cammuso and his wife, Beverly of East Greenwich, RI.. He was the son of the late Paul Cammuso and Madalena (Monfreda) Cammuso and is also predeceased by his sisters, Mary (Cammuso) Grampetro in 2018 and Rose (Cammuso) Caprioli.

John graduated from North High School, Central New England College, Worcester Polytechnical Institute, and the School of Industrial Management.

He was a 4-year Korean War Veteran (1951 to 1955), US Naval Aviation – 2nd class petty officer, air transportation squadron VR-22 CW operator on R4-D aircraft engaged in transport of bulletproof vests for combat troops in South Korea, in 1952 and 1953 proudly returned the wounded veterans to the United States.

John joined Riley Stoker Corporation in 1956 and worked for 62 years, which included the Babcock Power Inc. takeover in 1980. His duties included manager of power plant construction nationwide and the Caribbean. He was a nationally recognized heavy rigging expert for power plant construction over the last 50 years of employment. He was the “Holder of U.S. Patents” which included power plant expansion joint, power plant air cooled expansion joint and multi-sheave single plane rigging block.

He was a past member of ASME engineering society, American Corrosion Engineers, American Rigging Engineers, ASTM C-16 Thermal Engineering Committee, and trustee for international boilermakers’ pension, annuity and health and welfare boards. He was a present member of the executive committee and secretary boilermakers, northeast apprenticeship board, American legion post 3, Italian American War veterans, East Side Improvement Club, and VR-22 Korean War Veterans Association.

John enjoyed occasional golf getaways and weekly whist games with longtime friends of 70 years who include John Amato, Sam LaCanfora and special pal, Ralph “Duke” Nozzetti.

John was a person who neighbors, friends and family could always count on. He built additions on houses, helped with peoples housing electrical issues, plumbing issues, construction issues, drafting plans for whoever needed them. He did this out of the kindness of his heart. And “there on display” were his children for many years witnessing all these kind acts.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who called him Papa. He enjoyed the many years of family vacations, Disney World, Lake George, Lake Wentworth, and Wells Maine.
Lastly, he was proudest of his wife and sons and their ongoing dedication and participation in social services, charity fundraising and services assisting the sick and under-privileged.

His wife Carol thanks him for being a devoted, loving husband and for teaming up with her in teaching the 3 children Paul, Jeff and Mark about the important values in life, God, love, kindness, giving, honesty, devotion, loyalty and always assisting others.

John’s family would like to thank the Beacon Hospice Team (Mike & Jeff) for their love and care during his illness.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with John's family from 4 - 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 6 in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Monday, January 7 in St. George Church, 38 Brattle Street, Worcester followed by burial at Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Ave., Paxton.
