Biography
HOLDEN/WORCESTER – John H. Buzzell, 91, formerly of Worcester, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 11, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Worcester, John was the son of Clarence H. and Viola E. (Lajoie) Buzzell.
His beloved wife of 47 years, Rita (Adamonis) Buzzell died in 1996. He leaves two sons, John “Jack” M. Buzzell and his wife, Angela of Holden and Dennis J. Buzzell and his wife, Margaret of Worcester; his daughter, Kathleen M. Greenwood and her husband, Ray of Sterling; two grandchildren, James J. Greenwood and his wife, Michelle of Franklin and Kaitlyn M. Greenwood of Sterling.
John was a graduate of St. John’s High School, Class of 1942, where he played basketball and excelled as a pitcher in baseball. At the age of 19, John enrolled at the College of the Holy Cross before he enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served his country as a naval aviator and ensign during World War II in the African, European, and Atlantic Theaters. After returning home from the war, John attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute before going to work at New England Telephone in 1947, where he worked for 35 years retiring as a manager in 1982.
He was a founding member of St. George’s Church in Worcester and was formerly active in St. George’s Men’s Club, Boy Scouts of America and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a founding member and coach at Joe Schwartz Little League in Worcester. In his youth, he played semi-professional baseball for Eddie O’Brien’s Diner of the Worcester Industrial League. John and Rita retired to Orrington, Maine in 1977, and spent the next twenty wonderful years together. After Rita’s death, John moved to Holden where he lived for 10 years before becoming a resident of Sterling Village Nursing Facility.
John’s family would like to express its heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Sterling Village for their care and kindness over the past four years.
He was an avid outdoorsman and devoted New England sports fan, an especially passionate member of Red Sox Nation. John will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with John’s family from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 15, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, at St. George’s Church, 38 Brattle St., Worcester. Interment with military honors will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sterling Village Activities Fund, 18 Dana Hill Road, Sterling, MA 01564.
