HOLDEN, MA/WARWICK, RI - John-Stuart Sampson, 70, of Reservoir Street, Holden, died at home under the care of his loving wife on Thursday, July 26, 2012 after a long illness. He was born on July 29, 1941 in Warwick, the son of Stuart and Lillian (Thomson) Sampson and lived in Warwick and Florida before moving to the Worcester area four years ago.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Marilyn "Merry" Sampson of Holden; a brother, Alan Sampson and his wife Mildred of Cranston, RI; a sister, Deborah Winfield and her husband Donald of Warwick; four nephews and two nieces along with many friends and colleagues. Mr. Sampson graduated from Warwick Veteran's Memorial High School and went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree from Rhode Island College. He served his country in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas in the 501st Supply and Transportation Battalion. Mr. Sampson worked in finance for many years, retiring from Fidelity Investments as a Manager in 2002. He had a passion for reading and had an extraordinary knowledge of American history, especially the United States Presidents and the American Civil War. Mr. Sampson co-authored a book, The Beneficiary Book, on the topic of estate planning and he also taught a class on the topic of Business at Johnson and Wales University while working with the National Alliance of Business. Even after losing his gift of vision Mr. Sampson continued to educate himself by reading books made possible with the aid of his wife and the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. His sense of humor and love of history and learning will always be remembered.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Memorial donations may be made to the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Development Office, MAB Community Services, 200 Ivy Street, Brookline, MA 02446.
