STERLING- Joan S. Strang was born on January 25, 1947, to the late Anthony and Eleanor Listowich of Sterling. She graduated from Worcester State College and received a Master’s in Library Science from Fitchburg State College.
Joan worked at Leominster Public Library before beginning her career as a Librarian/Media Specialist at Clinton High School. She retired from the school district and remained close friends with many of her colleagues at Clinton High.
Joan was a lifelong resident of Sterling and was a tireless worker at the Sterling Fair. She was in charge of the Exhibit Halls and always made sure everything ran smoothly.
Another of Joan’s passions was the Sterling Historical Society. Joan was a Trustee of the Society, as well as Curator, past treasurer and past secretary. Joan volunteered at all their functions and was a faithful attendant at every Tuesday morning Museum open house. Joan knew everything about Sterling, the town she truly loved.
Joan loved animals and owned dogs and cats all her life. Her teenage dream of horse ownership was finally realized during her adult years. She spent many hours roaming the trails of the family farm on her horses, ensuring that the property was well maintained. Joan had a strong commitment to the family farm established by her grandparents, helping preserve its legacy over the years.
To Joan, family always came first. She took a special interest in the lives of her family members and was always ready to help anyone who needed it. Joan never had children of her own but was everyone’s favorite aunt. She took a special interest in each of her nephews and nieces and always made each one feel special.
Joan is survived by her sisters Mary (Michael) Flanagan of Sterling, MA, Janet (Dan) Griffin of Key Colony Beach, FL and her brother Jim (Betty Ann) Listowich of Freeman Township, ME. She is survived by nieces and nephews Brooke Flanagan, Julie Griffin, Steven Griffin, Ben Listowich and Emily Listowich, and her great-nephew Michael Flanagan Kroll. Her nephew Chad Flanagan welcomed her into heaven.
Joan’s family will celebrate her life privately. Donations in her memory can be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are in the care of Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd., Sterling.
