HOLDEN - Joan E. Welch, 79, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, on her 79th birthday. She was born on July 5, 1927 to Walter and Mary (King) Welch. She is predeceased by her parents, her brother, John “Jack” Welch, and her sister Mary (Welch) Travers. She is survived by her sister, Sr. Mary Joan Welch, SND; and three nephews, James Travers, John E. Welch, Jr., and Michael Welch.
Miss Welch lived all but four years of her life on Holt Road in Holden. She attended elementary school in Holden, then went on to graduate from Ascension High School of Worcester, prior to matriculating at Mount St. Mary’s College in Hookset, NH. She worked as a social worker for a brief period, prior to her 35-year career as an educator in Rutland and her beloved Holden. “Miss Welch” taught two generations of fifth graders at both Dawson and Rice Elementary Schools, where she also served as an assistant principal. She enjoyed many conversations with friends at the Holden Spa and KP’s.
Joan, as she was referred to by both young and old, was nurtured to a life of faith and service at home and at St. Mary’s Parish in Jefferson. She will be forever remembered as an advocate for the youth and senior citizens of Holden. Yet, it was her selfless devotion to her mother that best exemplified her personal qualities.
