STERLING – Joan Bladen Smiley, 68, was stricken ill at home and died Thursday, February 24, 2005 in Clinton Hospital.
She leaves her husband of 41 years, Malcolm Smiley; a daughter, Suzanne E. Sinnery of Lunenburg; two sons, David M. and Douglas S. Smiley both of Sterling; a brother, Robert Bladen of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren, Andrew and Alexandra Sinnery and Matthew Smiley. She was born in Hyannis the daughter of Eugene V. and Olive (Kelly) Bladen and lived many years in Chatham and 36 in Sterling. She was a great-granddaughter of Asa Shiverick, a builder of clipper ships in East Dennis.
Mrs. Smiley graduated from Chatham High School in 1954, followed by obtaining a teaching certificate from Bridgewater State College. After college she taught in the U.S. Air Force Overseas Teacher’s Program, serving in both Turkey and Germany. She was a long-term substitute teacher in the Sterling schools. She was involved in the local 4H program. She loved her animals, enjoyed gardening, reading and sewing and was a member of the Sterling Historical Society.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 1, at Hillside Cemetery, Clinton Road (Rte. 62), Sterling. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sterling Fire Dept., Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 515, Sterling, MA 01564; or to the Sterling Animal Shelter, 17 Laurelwood Road, Sterling, MA 01564. Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling, is directing arrangements.
