HOLDEN – Marie J. (Jorjorian) Whitaker, 72, of Holden died peacefully on Friday, May 2, 2008 surrounded by her loving family after a valiant 14-year battle with chronic myclogenous leukemia.
She leaves her husband of 50 years, Ronald A. Whitaker; a son, Dr. Scott Whitaker of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Wendy Lancey of Paxton and Holly Rochebort of Stowe, Vermont; five granddaughters, Julia, Alyssa, Ciara, Kaitlyn and Meghan; two sisters, Diana J. Johnson of Worcester and Carol J. Gibbon of Longboat Key, Florida; four nephews and three grandnieces.
Marie was born in Worcester, daughter of Arthur E. and Isabel (Calusdian) Jorjorian, and lived 42 years in Holden. She was a graduate of North High School and Wellesley College where she was a Durant Scholar. While raising her children, Marie volunteered at many agencies. Later she worked in the chemical engineering department at WPI and in the department of surgical research at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
Marie excelled in any craft she undertook and was a wonderful cook. She and Ron enjoyed fishing and biking on Cape Cod. Marie will be best remembered for her warmth and generous spirit. The family wishes to thank the staff at the University of Massachusetts Oncology Clinic and the Holden Nursing Home for their dedication and compassion in caring for Marie.
A private funeral service will be held in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. The family requests that flowers be omitted and donations made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney Street, Boston, MA 02115.
