HOLDEN – Daniel J. Harrington, Jr., 82, of 23 Virginia Hill Dr., died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, December 29, 2008 in the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, Worcester, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He leaves his wife and best friend of 59 years, Ann J. (Oliver) Harrington; a son, Daniel J. Harrington III and his wife Cathy of Rutland; two daughters, Susan M. DiNoia and her husband Leonard of Holden and MaryAnn McGrain of Holden; a sister, Mary Wentworth of Granby; five grandchildren, Amy Harrington of Leicester, Jill Harrington of Holden, Todd McGrain of Andover, Nicole DiNoia of Somerville and Andrew DiNoia of Cambridge; two step-grandchildren, Deirdre and John Donahue of Rutland; a great-grandson, Devon Henderson; and several nieces and nephews. A grandson, Peter Harrington DiNoia, predeceased him.
A lifelong resident of Holden, Dan was born in Worcester to Daniel J. and Edith F. (Yonker) Harrington, Sr. He was a graduate of Holden High School in 1944 and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he received an Engineering degree in 1950. Dan was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army in France for 18 months.
Dan was the President of Sunnyside Motor Company in Holden until his retirement. He received numerous President's Awards and Distinguished Achievement Awards from Ford Motor Co. He was a member of the National and State Automobile Associations and received the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award. Active in his community, Dan served as a trustee of the Gale Free Library for 30 years as well as on the boards of Anna Maria College, Holden Hospital and the Quinsigamond Community College Foundation. He was also a past director of the American Red Cross and the Better Business Bureau of Worcester. In addition, Dan formerly served on the President's Advisory Council at W.P.I. and the Holden Chamber of Commerce. He was involved in the Red Cross Blood Donors Program for over 40 years. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary's Church where he served on the finance board and as a lector.
Dan's family would like to thank the staff at Notre Dame Long Term Care Center for their kindness and the excellent care they provided to Dan.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 1st, in Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The funeral for Dan will be held on Friday, January 2nd, from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, 1326 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Mary's Church Building Fund, P.O.
