WORCESTER - Jean L. (Laverty) Maloney, 81, of Worcester, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Friday, November 4, 2016 at St. Vincent Hospital. Born and raised in Worcester, Jean was the daughter of Chester J. and Mary “Minnie” L. (McCoy) Laverty.
After graduating from St. Peter’s High School, Jean attended Worcester State College where she earned a bachelor's in elementary education and double masters degrees. While a student she met, and married Gerald “Jerry" Maloney in 1957, settling in Worcester where they raised their four children. Jean taught elementary education, specializing in reading, in the Worcester Public Schools. She later earned her Certificate in Advanced Graduate Studies in Education from Harvard University.
She enjoyed knitting, reading, genealogy and taking cruises with her grandchildren who affectionately referred to her as “Nannie.” Jean was thoughtful, selfless and a proud wife, mother and grandmother. As a passionate educator she instilled the desire to learn in her children, grandchildren, and students over the years. She volunteered her time and talent for several years knitting caps for the infants in local neonatal units. For many years she was a alumni interviewer for new student applicants to Harvard University. She served on many boards and church committees.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, Jerry Maloney, also a long time Worcester educator; their three daughters, one son, and ten grandchildren: Jill and Peter Curatolo of Manchester by the Sea and their two children Alexandra and William; Kim and Bob Beaton of Virginia and their three sons, Nathan, Maxx and Adam; Kelly and Jeff Eaves of England and their two children, Kieran and Sorrel; Michael and Carol Maloney of Princeton and their three sons, Christopher, Benjamin and Sam who lived with her in recent years.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jean’s family from 4 to 7 pm on Monday, November 7, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden.
