Jean Brown Jones

November 4, 1931 — April 24, 2020

STERLING - Jean Brown Jones passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 24th after a brief illness.

Born and raised in Sterling, she was the daughter of Albert N. and Marguerite (Russell) Brown and the last of their family of 7 to live in Sterling. Her brothers Russell, Bruce and Elliot, all Navy veterans, have since passed.

Jean graduated from Leominster High School and Leominster Hospital School of Nursing and was an RN her whole life, working at many of the area hospitals in the OR, as floor nurse, private duty, and the ICU where she spent most of her early career. Along the way, in the summers of ‘68 and ‘69, she found time to be camp nurse at Camp Bement in Charlton, MA. Later, she went to work in Boston for the State of Massachusetts on the Utilization Review team for 20 years, and as she approached retirement worked as a mental health facility consultant, working with JCAHO compliance, also in medical records review, as well as several nursing homes as an RN.

She had a passion for the healthcare field, and loved being a nurse. It was the perfect career for her.

Jean was always involved in lives of her children. And in her 88 trips around the sun she enjoyed becoming a homemaker, den mother, camper, hiker, skier, tennis player, gardener, friend, neighborhood doctor, second Mom to many, and most of all, a Grandma. She loved the theater, classical music, visits with her friends, her trips to the Vineyard, Maine Seacoast, and to Florida with her sister Joyce. Jean was an avid Patriots fan and loved a great game of tennis.

The holidays were always special to her, and being with her family was the greatest joy of her life.

She will be missed dearly by her sister Joyce Trevitt of Chatham, her sons Greg of Boston, Charlie of Ashburnham, David and his wife Bonnie of Worcester; her granddaughters Audrey and Liz, and grandsons Chris and Brad. She leaves many nieces, nephews and extended family from California to Virginia and the Northeast, and lots of very dear lifelong friends and co-workers.

Jean was predeceased by her daughter Joanne of Sterling, and her daughter-in-law Carolyn of Boston.

The family would really like to thank the staff at Holy Trinity in Worcester for their compassionate care, as well as the doctors, nurses and staff in the ICU at UMass Medical Center University Campus for their professionalism, transparency and grace, during what has been a very difficult and challenging time.

Burial will be with her parents and brothers at Oak Hill Cemetery in Sterling at the family’s convenience, and will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jean’s memory can be made to the Town of Sterling Fire Department, P.O. Box 515, Sterling, MA 01564
