WORCESTER - During the evening of Tuesday, May 2, 2023, Jay Joel Schlickman of Lexington, Bedford, and Worcester, passed away at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. He was the son of Dr. Philip Schlichtmann and Rose (Pastor). He was predeceased by his sister Isabel Silver, and brothers Howard Slickman and Alvin Schlichtmann. He is survived by his sister Natalie Kargher.

He was a man of consummate love for his family. He married the love of his life Judith (Goldstein) and the marriage continued for 66 years. He adored his three children David Schlickman and his wife Wendy, Mark Schlickman and his wife Janice, and Frances Wolf. He was thrilled to have enjoyed his grandchildren Cara Rose Schlickman and “Q” Alamin , Arielle Schlickman-Elak and Daniel Elak, and Jake Wolf. He recently met his great-granddaughter Adinah Alamin. He cherished Garry Feely as a son. He is also survived by his many loving nieces and nephews. His love for the State of Israel was boundless. He fully embraced humanity’s longing to find a purpose in existence when he published his last book in 2018, “The Rubaiyat of Jay J. Schlickman.”
Jay graduated Northeastern University with a B.S. and M.S. in physics, and worked as an industrial physicist. As one of the first people to fire a ruby-laser, his observations of the dangerous power of the device resulted in the publication in 1965 of the paper “Dark Side of the Laser”. He had great pride that his work in far-infrared mercury-cadmium-telluride photoconductors went on to make spectacular discoveries on the Hubble and Webb space telescopes. His twenty-one years consulting in quality management and system design resulted in his writing a textbook that is still used world-wide.

In his retirement, he rediscovered his talents in the arts. Despite increasing incapacitation from a brain tumor, he created some of his best paintings and sculpture.
