Janith C. (Finlayson) Dorsey

HOLDEN - Janith C. (Finlayson) Dorsey of Holden passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 31, 2014, at age 100 years.

She was born in Worcester on November 11, 1913, daughter of Frank J. and Ellen (McPhee) Finlayson. She married Charles L. Dorsey in 1938 and they moved to Holden in 1946. Their daughter, Linda E. Dorsey, died in 1955, their son, Charles Frank Dorsey, died in 2005, and her husband, Charles, died in 1979. She was also predeceased by three brothers, Kenneth M., Frank S. and Robert K. Finlayson.

Mrs. Dorsey graduated from Classical High School and the former Becker Business College, now Becker College, both in Worcester. She was a founding member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Holden, a life member of the Holden Garden Club and a member of the Friends of the Holden Council on Aging. An environmentalist, she was a member of the Worcester County Horticultural Society, the World Wildlife Fund, the National Wildlife Federation, the Nature Conservatory and the South County Conservatory of Rhode Island.

She worked as a legal secretary in Worcester for many years and previously was a secretary in the advertising department of the former Heald Machine Co. She was an accomplished artist with many of her seascapes paintings inspired by her summer home at Quonochontaug Beach in Charlestown, Rhode Island.

Mrs. Dorsey is survived by two nieces, two nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and her friend and caregiver, John Sweeney of Holden. The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. David A. Rosenfield and two nurses from VNA Hospice, Peggy and Jennifer, for their outstanding care and compassion.

A funeral service in celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 5, at St. Francis Episcopal Church, Holden. Spring burial will be in Grove Cemetery, Holden. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Francis Episcopal Church, 70 Highland Street, Holden, MA 01520. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
