Janice M. (Prouty) Howland

March 26, 1941 — April 12, 2016

HOLDEN/NEW BRAINTREE – Janice M. (Prouty) Howland, 75, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of her loving family on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born and raised in Hardwick, Janice was the daughter of Homer and Helen (Walsh) Prouty and lived 30 years in Holden before moving to New Braintree in 1989.
She leaves her loving husband of 53 years, William Howland; two daughters, Karen Walker and her husband, Tim of Northborough and Wendy Langan and her husband, Jim of Fayetteville, NC; two sons, Jeff Howland and his wife, Brenda and Rob Howland and his wife, Suzette all of New Braintree; eight grandchildren, Rachel, Tim, Lindsey, Tyler, Kate, Ryan, Jamison, Kayli; two sisters, Shirley Avery and her husband, Dick of Worcester and Elaine Barrett of  Lee, New Hampshire; her sister-in-law, Anna Pond of East Longmeadow; and many nephews and nieces.
Janice graduated from Hardwick High School and Mass General Hospital School of Nursing.  She later received her Bachelor’s in Nursing from Assumption College. She began her 54 year career as a registered nurse at Hahnemann Hospital where she worked for 30 years. After spending the next 20 plus years at UMass Memorial – Belmont Street, Janice officially retired and continued to work per diem at UMass Memorial until the day that she was diagnosed with cancer. Janice was proud to have participated in the Harvard Nursing Research Study for the past 40 years. She had dedicated her life to medicine. Janice was always caring for others; during her few good days of treatment, she made a beautiful lap quilt that she sent to another cancer patient hoping to provide them comfort.
Her greatest joy in life was being at her beautiful home in New Braintree with her husband Bill and their family.  You would often find her puttering around in one of her many flower and vegetable gardens.  When she wasn’t gardening, she was busy quilting, cooking or working on a puzzle. Janice very much enjoyed participating in her grandchildren’s daily activities, especially in watching their athletic and school functions.  She was an avid traveler who spent nearly the last 20 years traveling the world with her husband and close friends. Amongst her favorite trips was a recent Safari in Africa, seeing the Tulip Festival in Holland and touring China.
Janice was an active member in the Tri-Parish Church where she also enjoyed playing in the Hand-bell choir. She volunteered in the Worcester County 4-H program, including being a 4-H leader while her children were young.
Her family would like to thank the medical team at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in both Boston and Milford and also a special thank you to Susie Young for holding our hand during the difficult 6 month “journey.”
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Janice’s family from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Ret. 122A), Holden. A memorial service honoring her life will be held at 1 pm on Sunday, April 17, at New Braintree Congregational Church, 3 Oakham Road, New Braintree, with Pastor Deb Shepard officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Janice’s name to the New Braintree Congregational Church, 3 Oakham Road, New Braintree, MA 01531.  To share a memory or offer a condolence, please "sign the guest book" on this page.
