RUTLAND – Janet “Nana” R. (Thompson) LaPorte, 78, passed away peacefully at home, under the loving care of her family, on Saturday, June 29, 2013.
Born in Saxonville, Janet was the daughter Leslie and Ruby (Brown) Thompson and lived in Hubbardston 20 years before moving to Rutland in 1989.
Janet trained to be a licensed practical nurse at Leominster Hospital where she worked for several years. She later worked as a dispatcher for the Hubbardston Police and Fire departments for 10 years. Janet enjoyed her position as a house mother and cook at the Devereux School in Rutland for 20 years, retiring in 2000. After retirement, she delivered auto parts for Federated in Holden.
She was a long-time volunteer at the Rutland Senior Center. She organized one of the first all-female explorer posts located at the Hubbardston Fire Department and was also a member of the their Women’s Auxiliary. Janet loved baking for her family and friends and will be remembered as a caring, giving and passionate woman.
Janet was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Irvin “Shorty” A. LaPorte, in 2000. She leaves her children, Sharon Marie Sullivan of Gardner, David I. LaPorte of Myrtle Beach, SC, Diana R. Gaudette of Spencer, James P. LaPorte of Virginia Beach, VA, Debra J. Sears of Northbridge, Spence A. LaPorte of Myrtle Beach, SC, Daniel G. Beckwith of Rutland with whom she lived and Cynthia L. Slocum of Holden; her sisters, Gwendoline Rich of Hudson and Norma Newman of New Smyrna Beach, FL; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Donna R. Sandstrom and her sisters, Virginia Maxwell and Carol Palmer.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday, July 2, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A memorial service celebrating Janet’s life will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, July 3, in the funeral home.
