Janet M. (Shoemaker) Greffrath

HOLDEN/SHREWSBURY – Janet M. (Shoemaker) Greffrath, 84, of 218 Reservoir Street, Holden, a 30-year resident of Shrewsbury, died at home on Saturday, December 17, 2005.

Her husband of 25 years, Lewis B. Greffrath, died in 1972. She leaves her son, Charles A. Greffrath and his wife Joan of Worcester; two daughters, Nancy A. Stassi and her husband John of Holden and Janet M. “Peggy” Menegakis of Los Angeles, CA; five grandchildren, Elena, Michael and Peter Menegakis all of Acton, and Elisa and Drew Knapic of Holden; and cousins. She was born in New York City, daughter of Albert J. and Vida C. (Kraft) Shoemaker, and lived in Southboro and Shrewsbury before moving to Holden six years ago. She earned a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from the Pratt Institute, a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from New York University and a Master of Arts from Worcester State College.

Mrs. Greffrath was an Art Teacher for 40 years, and most recently for the Shrewsbury Public Schools retiring in 1988. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Jefferson, a former member of St. Mary’s Church in Shrewsbury, member of the Mass. Teachers and Shrewsbury Teachers Associations, member and past president of the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, Board member of the Shrewsbury Senior Center and Arts Council, member of the Holden Women’s Club, and served on the Board of Directors and Visitors at the Washburn House. Since 1987 she enjoyed her summer home in the Oak Bluffs area of Martha’s Vineyard. She was an avid bridge player and played bridge in Oak Bluffs and was a member of the Cavendish Bridge Club in Worcester.

The funeral for Mrs. Greffrath will be held on Tuesday, December 20, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, with a Mass at 1 p.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, December 19, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Walk to Cure Cancer, UMass Memorial Hospital, 55 Lake Avenue North, Worcester, MA 01655.
