RUTLAND – Janet A. (Horne) Barakian, 81 years of age died Wednesday April 25, 2018 after a short stay at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Worcester and raised in Jefferson, Janet was the daughter of Andrew and Dorothy (Lehman) Horne and lived 50 years in Rutland.
She leaves her two daughters, Lynn Patterson and her husband, Chuck of Rutland and Deborah Barakian of Rutland; three grandchildren, Benjamin R. and Travis M. Frost and David Patterson; great-grandsons, Cole Patterson and Brandon Roberts; a sister, Dorothy Gove of Jefferson; her brother, Donald Horne and his wife, Cheryl of Illinois; many nephews and nieces; and many loving longtime friends; especially her friend, Margaret Rotti and her family of West Boylston.
Janet was a member of the first graduating class from Wachusett Regional High School in 1955. She worked for the Town of Rutland for over 30 years in various roles including dispatching from her home for the Police and Fire Departments. Fond memories include dispatching during the huge fires at the old Rutland State Sanitarium when many Towns were called in to assist. Janet also worked at the Police Station in the Wood House in the center of Town as the Clerk and Matron and enjoyed traffic detail during the repaving of Route 122.
Janet was a ‘staple in the community of Rutland’ as known by friends. Community service and helping her community was extremely important to Janet. Since moving to Rutland with her family in 1968, she was passionately involved in the Rutland Historical Society, running their Antique Shows and Flea Markets and raising funds for the Civil War Monument Restoration among other things. She served in various roles at the Historical Society and fondly spoke of her friendships with others sharing the similar desires to preserve the history of the Town. Janet served on the Library Board of Trustees for several years and was instrumental in building the new Town Library. As a member of the First Congregational Church, Janet served as a Deacon on the Pastoral Committee, and was a member of the Music Committee and Monday Club.
Janet was the Chair of the Rutland 22nd Annual Town Wide Yard Sale–the event that is occurring today Saturday April 28. Over the past 22 years the efforts of Janet and her Committee have raised over $50,000 for the Town’s Fourth Of July Celebration. She enjoyed being a member of the Fourth of July Committee and was honored to be the Parade Grand Marshall with her husband Dick in 2005.
Janet strongly desired to express her thanks and gratitude to Dr. Mary Maloney and her office staff.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 3-6 PM on Sunday April 29 at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
