STERLING/WEST BOYLSTON – Jane W. (Whitcomb) Leslie, 88, a 47 year resident of Sterling, died peacefully on Thursday, December 5, 2013 under the loving care of her family and the staff at Sterling Village in Sterling.
Jane was born and raised in West Boylston, the daughter of Ralph Oswald and Alta M. (Walker) Whitcomb and was a direct descendent of West Boylston’s town founder, Ezra Beaman. Jane graduated from West Boylston High School and was an operator at New England Telephone for over 30 years, retiring in 1986.
She was predeceased by her husband, James F. Leslie, who passed away in 1955 and by her son, James R. Leslie, who passed away in 2002. Jane is survived by her daughter, Diane Leslie of Shrewsbury; a sister, June Marvin of Sarasota, FL; nieces and nephews, including her niece and caregiver, Loret R.W. Schur of Sterling; and her dear friend, Leon “Woody” Woodcock of Sterling. Three brothers, Edgar A., Ralph O. and Lorenz E. Whitcomb and a sister, Jacquelyn Dolan, predeceased her.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jane’s family from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 8, followed by a 2:00 p.m. funeral service at the Miles-Sterling Funeral & Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling. Burial will be private at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in West Boylston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Jane to the Sterling Historical Society, P.O. Box 356, Sterling, MA 01564.
