PRINCETON - Jane C. Sargent, MD, Professor of Neurology, University of Massachusetts Medical School, died on October 26, 2021 at the age of 76 after a brief (non-COVID) illness. She was renowned as a neurologist, outstanding both as a teacher and clinician, and a loving mother of two daughters.
Dr. Sargent, a longtime resident of Princeton, Massachusetts, was born
in Brevard County, Florida, on November 8, 1944. She attended Greenwich
Academy and graduated from The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA, then
attended Radcliffe College for a time. At one point, she attended four
colleges concurrently to gain the prerequisites required for medical
school. She attended Hahnemann University College of Medicine (now
Drexel University College of Medicine), receiving her medical degree in
1974. After her internship, she completed her residency in Neurology at
the Mayo Clinic. After her residency, Dr. Sargent joined UMASS. As Professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Dr. Sargent specialized in Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology. She trained countless neurology residents in her over forty years at UMASS. In recent years, she studied Spanish in order to communicate more effectively with some of her patients. As a result, she purchased a second home in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.
Dr. Sargent was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Irvin Cummin
and Katharine Hewitt Cummin of Villanova, PA, and her daughters, writer
Alexandra Sargent-Colburn and painter Caroline Augusta Sargent.
She is survived by her grandson, Alexander Wheeler Hale as well as her
sisters, Ann Brown, Dana Cummin, and Ellen Cousins.
