BERLIN -- Jane “Janie” (Rubenstein) Rutman, 73, passed away peacefully on October 1st, 2022 after a long illness. She was surrounded by her loving husband Steve, who never left her side, and her three children.
Janie was the matriarch of the family in every sense of the word. From planning family gatherings to martini parties to her own funeral, she was always in control. Nothing got by her.
Married to Steve for 54 years, Janie was the light of his life. In the nearly six decades they spent together, they enjoyed traveling, eating out, and spending as much time as possible supporting their kids and grandkids.
She spent most of her career working for a major Boston travel corporation negotiating cruise contracts. As a result, she was able to travel worldwide, visiting far-off places such as China and New Zealand.
Janie was an avid Boston sports fan and could often be found pacing the house during a tense game. She loved spending summers on Martha’s Vineyard, and later at her home near Old Silver Beach in Falmouth with her family and friends almost always at her side. Janie loved to entertain and cook for her family and friends especially her grandchildren, who could often be found in the kitchen with her.
She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her husband of 54 years, Steve, affectionately known as “T”; daughter Mindy Boyd and her husband Ken of Tyngsboro; daughter Sue Hopkins and her husband Brad of Holden, son Jeff Rutman and his wife Beth of Northborough; 10 grandchildren; Cassidy, Joshua, Hannah, Jack, Will, Raegan, Amelia, Reagan, Greta, and Cameron.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, October 6, at Congregation Beth Israel, 15 Jamesbury Dr., Worcester. Burial will be held privately at Beit Olam Cemetery in Wayland. In Memorial donations may be made in Janie’s name to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave., Boston 02215, or UMASS Memorial Cancer Center, office of Philanthropy, 365 Plantation St., Biotech One, Worcester, MA 01605 (
