RUTLAND – James L. Wood, 94, of Highland Park Road, died peacefully in his home under the loving care of his family on Thursday, December 15, 2011. Mr. Wood was born in Kingsbridge, Devonshire, England, the son of Norman and Laura (Olds) Wood; moved to New York City at the age of five, and later lived 25 years in Gardner and 65 years in Rutland.
Mr. Wood graduated from Gardner High School and was an instrument technician at Norton Company in Worcester where he worked for 38 years retiring in 1979. He was a World War II Army Veteran and was a member of the former Rutland American Legion Post. He was also a member of the Greendale People’s Church, Greendale Retired Men’s Club and the Alethea Grotto Band all in Worcester, and a 50 year member of Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons in Rutland.
He served on the Board of Selectman in Rutland for 22 years, the Rutland School Committee, and the first Wachusett School Committee.
Mr. Wood leaves his loving wife of 46 years, Esther A. (Larson) Wood; two sons, Lawrence Wood and his wife Debra of Worcester and Ronald Wood of Aiken, South Carolina; three grandchildren, David Wood, Katelyn Wood and Nicole Burns; and two great grandchildren, Kamryn and Nolan Burns. A son, John Wood and a brother, Reginald Wood, predeceased him.
A memorial service honoring Mr. Wood’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 22, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. The Rev. C. Ronald Wilson will be officiating.
