James S. Durkin

December 26, 1912 — April 19, 2005

WORCESTER – James S. Durkin, 92, formerly of 1236 Pleasant St., died on Tuesday, April 19, 2005, in St. Mary’s Health Care Center from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

His wife of 68 years, Virginia (Jones) Durkin, died in 2002. He leaves three daughters, Judith Petit of Sterling, Diane Clark of Wilton, CT, and Deborah Lukeris of Newtown, CT. His daughter, Patricia Rosenlund, predeceased him. He also leaves two sons, J. Michael Durkin of Sacramento, CA, and William P. Durkin of Gardner; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Two brothers, William and Philip, and a sister, Mary Leary, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of James and Anna (Boyle) Durkin. He graduated from Classical High School in 1932 and attended Worcester Technical School and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Jim worked for 36 years at Morgan Construction Co., retiring in 1976. He was a member of Christ The King Church, involved in Christian Doctrine classes and was a lector for many years. He was a life member of the Greendale Retired Men’s Club and played in its golf league. He was a member of the Athletic Club, bowling team and golf league at Morgan’s. He enjoyed gardening and all sports.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Jim’s funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 22, in Christ The King Church, 1052 Pleasant Street, Worcester. Private burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.

The family wishes to express appreciation to the dedicated staff at St. Mary’s Health Care Center and to a friend and caretaker, Ella Cahill of Rutland. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Music Therapy/Harp Program at St. Mary’s Health Care Center, 39 Queen Street, Worcester, MA 01610; or to the Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 36 Cameron Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02140.
