Biography
HOLDEN - James V. Ranaghan, 64, of Jefferson, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester. Born in Marshfield, Jim was raised in Marshfield and Brant Rock the son of James F. and Harriett (Lilley) Ranaghan, and lived 20 years in Worcester before moving to Jefferson in 1992.
He leaves his beloved wife 23 years, Judith A. (Laprade) Ranaghan; his daughter, Kathleen Ranaghan and her husband Brian Wyrzykowski of Worcester; two step-sons, John A. Holmes and his wife Roberta of Holden and Eric M. Holmes and his wife Stacey of Ellsworth, Maine; four grandchildren, Kayla Ranaghan, and Dakota, Cooper and Camden Holmes.
Jim graduated from Marshfield High School and attended both Becker College and Worcester State College. In 1970, he started his thirty two year career working as a correctional guard for the Massachusetts Department of Correction. He was passionate about his chosen profession and advanced quickly through the ranks. He was appointed Director of Security and Transportation and served the last five years of his career as the Superintendent at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital Correctional Unit, until his retirement in 2002.
Jim was an avid New England sports fan and enjoyed golf and fishing. He also had an appreciation for antiques and collected blue glass. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and trips to Aruba and Las Vegas.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jim’s family from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden, followed by a prayer service honoring his life at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Worcester Animal Rescue League, 139 Holden St., Worcester, MA 01606.
