STERLING – James Porter Pratt, 90, a lifelong resident of Sterling, passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the Life Care Center of Leominster after an illness. He was born in Clinton, the son of George E. and Pearl (Porter) Pratt and graduated from the Tabor Naval Academy in 1942.
He leaves his loving wife of 68 years, Carol J. (VanVleck) Pratt; six sons, James L. Pratt of Woodstock, CT, G. Stephen Pratt of Manchester, NH, Dr. Edward P. Pratt of Lost Nation, IA, David K. Pratt of Charlotte, NC, Dr. Thomas H. Pratt of Bedford, NH and Pastor Jonathan E. Pratt of Sterling; eighteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three nieces. He was predeceased by two sisters.
James was a Navy veteran serving with the 67th construction battalion known as the Seabees that worked to construct an airfield on Tinian Island during World War II. He was a banker for many years working throughout New England, retiring from the Danielson Federal Saving Bank in 1979. He was a member of the First Church in Sterling, the Hiram O. Taylor American Legion Post 189 and the Sons of Cincinnati.
A memorial service honoring Mr. Pratt’s life will be held on Tues., Dec 9, at 10 a.m. in the Bethlehem Bible Church, 307 Lancaster Street, West Boylston. A committal service will be held at a later date at Oakhill Cemetery in Sterling. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sterling Historical Society, P.O. Box 356, Sterling, MA 01564. Arrangements are under the care of the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling.
