HOLDEN - James M. Mahan, 81, formerly of Worcester, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, December 15, 2023, with his loving family by his side. Born and raised in Worcester, Jim was the son of the late James W. and Agnes (LaPlante) Mahan; he spent the last decade of his life in Holden.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Helene M. (Grampietro) Mahan and leaves behind a legacy of love through his three sons, Paul J. Mahan and his wife Kelly of Holden, Thomas J. Mahan and his wife Pam of Holden, and David J. Mahan and his wife Christine of Worcester. He is also survived by two brothers, John F. Mahan and his wife Mary of Millbury and Paul A. Mahan and his wife Donna of Holden, a sister, Patricia Mahan of Holden, and three cherished grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, and Emily, as well as many nephews and nieces.
Jim was a proud graduate of Commerce High School in Worcester, class of 1960. Following his graduation, he served honorably in the United States Army from 1960 to 1963. Jim's career as a union electrician spanned over 40 years as a dedicated member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 96. He applied his trade primarily in the Worcester area but also worked in Minnesota, the Alaskan Pipeline and spent several years in Connecticut before retiring in 2003.
In retirement, Jim and Helene loved spending their winters in Garden City Beach, South Carolina. At the age of 61, Jim decided to take up golf and spent many years chasing that little white ball around the Myrtle Beach area. Together, they developed many new friendships in the area with people they cared about. When he was back in Holden for the summers, he enjoyed his time volunteering at the St. Peter's Food Bank.
Above all, Jim was a family man, nothing was more important to him. He cherished spending time with loved ones and especially with his three beautiful grandchildren, who meant the world to him. Throughout his years, he would travel the globe to watch his children or grandchildren's sporting events and spent a lot of time in freezing-cold hockey rinks. He was a man of faith who was devoted to his family and someone who was always willing to lend a helping hand to whoever needed it.
Jim will be remembered for his unwavering love, his dedication to family, and the positive impact he had on all those fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in peace.
