HOLDEN - James “Jimmy” Purcell, 72, a man who proudly served the people of the City of Worcester as a member of the Worcester Police Department, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester. He was born and raised in Worcester, a son of the late Jeremiah and Florence (Martin) Purcell. Jimmy graduated from Commerce High School and earned a criminal justice degree from Quinsigamond Community College. He began his 30 year police career as a patrolman and soon went on to become a detective. He was an integral part of a team that tirelessly worked to solve several high profile cases, including a case in which he was honored by the United States Department of State. Jimmy received the Walter Scott medal for extraordinary valor, the police department’s highest award. In addition, the mayor of Worcester presented him a “Key to the City” for his service. Jimmy also served in the Massachusetts National Guard. Jimmy loved spending time with his family and found great pleasure hosting holiday gatherings. He was an enthusiastic New England sports team fan, and could often be found squeezing in some game time viewing during family events. An avid golfer, Jimmy truly enjoyed the time he spent on the links amongst his friends. He was the longtime president of the Worcester Police golf league. One of his greatest passions was for classic cars, especially his ‘64 TBird. Jimmy spent countless hours tweaking the engine and keeping it as original as he could. He and Joyce enjoyed summer rides with the top down and visiting local cruise nights. The most enjoyable rides were with his grandson, Owen. He was a member of the Saint George’s Parish family and the Worcester Lodge of Elks. He leaves his beloved wife of 47 years, Joyce A. (Wentzel); his two sons, Brian Purcell of Berkeley, CA and Michael Purcell and his wife, Anna of Mashpee; his brother, Gerry Purcell of Marina del Rey, CA; his sister, Mary Purcell of Grafton; his cherished only grandson, Owen; as well as several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jimmy’s family on Thursday, March 3, from 4-7 p.m. at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. His funeral will be celebrated on Friday, March 4, from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at Saint George’s Church, 40 Brattle Street, Worcester. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Saint George’s Parish, 40 Brattle Street, Worcester, MA 01606.
