WORCESTER – James (Jim) C. Dolan, age 92, passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at UMass Medical Center – University Campus in Worcester. Born in Waltham, he was the son of the late James J. Dolan and Bridget (Donnogher) Dolan, both of whom were born in Ireland.
Jim was raised on his parent’s farm in Weston, MA, and graduated from Northeastern University with a bachelor’s degree in 1953. He then served his country in the Army Corps of Engineers in one of the first integrated units in the military, stationed in France.
After starting his career in New York City, he worked for many years as a technical sales engineer in Pennsylvania. He married Deawn Young and had three children, Chris, Brett, and Jennifer.
After the marriage ended, Jim returned to his roots in Massachusetts, where he met and married Carol (Jepsen) Buckser. They were married for over two decades before Carol succumbed to bone cancer in 2008. Jim was able to find love again later in life with Elizabeth Mullaney. He was adopted into Elizabeth’s large Irish American family.
Jim found fulfillment in helping others. For example, he supported the Sudanese children who had been resettled to Worcester, and he was a proud friend of Bill W. He also volunteered for the Jericho Road Project and the Committee for Nonviolent Solutions. He was a longtime and active member of the First Unitarian Church in Worcester.
Jim was a charmer. He loved to laugh and was genuinely interested in other people. Although he always called himself a farm boy, he enjoyed cities, travel, and learning new things. A lifelong learner, Jim always read books, studied philosophy and even took up tango in his 80s. He was a firm believer in social justice and found happiness in small things.
He is survived by his partner, Elizabeth; his two sons, Christopher Dolan (and wife Laura) of San Jose, CA, and Brett Dolan (and wife Linda) of Norristown, PA; his stepsons, Douglas Buckser of Australia, Jeffrey Buckser of San Jose, CA, and Andrew Buckser (and wife, Susan) of Essex Junction, VT; his stepdaughter, Alison Buckser of Providence; and his six grandchildren, Kathryn, Rachel, Sarah, Edward, James and Oliver. He was predeceased by his wife Carol, his grandson William, his daughter Jennifer, and his sisters, Mary Corcoran, Margaret Dolan and Alice Coakley.
