RUTLAND – James J. Flanagan, 63, of Rutland, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 26, 2015, under the loving care of his family and the staff at UMass Memorial Medical Center – University Campus, after a recent diagnosis of cancer. Born in Worcester and raised in Boylston, Jimmy was the son of George and Joanna (Roughan) Flanagan and lived 16 years in Rutland.
He leaves his wife, Debra (Francis) Flanagan; his children, Melissa Flanagan of Greenfield, Will Hackler and his wife, Sharon of Townsend, Wendy Hackler of Sterling, Sarah Camacho and her husband, Justin of Gardner, Stephanie Snyder and her husband, Stephen of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Samuel Besnoff of Rutland. He also leaves seven brothers and sisters, George and his wife, Laurie, Thomas and his wife, Diane, and Joseph and his wife, Patty Flanagan, Katie Brown and her husband, Jack, Susie Grandfrido, Mary Ellen Fryberg and her husband, Scott, and Judy Gray and her husband, Tony; 11 grandchildren, Madelyn, Margaret, and Derek Hackler, Aaron and Kelsey Gotham, Benjamin, Max, and William Camacho, Keegan, Evalyn, and Gwynevere Snyder and many nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Tahanto Regional High School in Boylston and went immediately to work at New England Telephone Co. Jimmy worked forty years as a lineman and held a union steward position at Verizon before retiring in 1999. He was an avid New England Sports fan and particularly enjoyed watching his beloved Boston Red Sox. Throughout the years, Jimmy played several sports including baseball and golf. He loved almost any activity that would find him outdoors, and after his retirement, Jimmy enjoyed spending time with his grandkids.
He was often present at football games and practices, opening day for the baseball/softball seasons, basketball games and dance recitals and loved to take the grandkids fishing during the summer. When he was not occupied with the grandchildren he enjoyed spending time in the garden and maintaining a pristine lawn.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jimmy’s family from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A funeral service honoring his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, at Holden Chapel, 279 Reservoir St., Holden.
