HENDERSONVILLE, NC - James E. Doten, 92 of Hendersonville, NC, died March 3, 2024 at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC after a brief illness. Jim was born in South Walden, VT on November 8, 1931, the first-born son of Howard and Edith (Perkins) Doten. He later lived in Canaan, NH through the fifth grade, moving to Jaffrey, NH where he graduated from Conant High School in 1949. Jim was a direct descendant of Mayflower passenger Edward Doty.
He was the loving husband of 62 years to the late Ruth Doten, with whom he raised three children in Holden, MA, Stephen Doten of Hendersonville, NC, Glenn Doten (Linn) of Bedford, NH, and the late Donna Morris of Worcester, MA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Robert Croteau, James Croteau, Amy Croteau, James Doten, Sarah Todd, and Elaine Jackson, and four great grandchildren Joshua Doten, Dillon Corral, Patricia Grace Todd and Elgin Jackson of whom he was very proud.
Jim enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean War, serving from 1951 through 1955 as a Lithographer in Map Reproduction aboard the USS Mount Olympus AGC-8. After Jim’s discharge from the Navy, he spent many years managing his printing business, Offset Service, in Worcester, MA. Jim was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Holden, MA as well as Grace Lutheran Church of Hendersonville, NC.
He loved to play cards, and spent many fun evenings with his friends at Lake Pointe Landing where he spent his later years. He was an avid reader and often exchanged books with the other residents. He had a solid group of dinner companions with whom he shared conversation and exchanged stories of the past. He loved all sports, whether watching a live game on tv, or a championship rerun from years ago.
Jim is survived by his brother William Doten and his wife Maggie of San Antonio, TX, his sisters-in-law Beverly Doten of Holden, MA and Beryle Doten of Hampden, MA, and many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Gerald Doten, David Doten and John Doten, and his sister Nancy Doten.
