HOLDEN - James E. Dickman, 68, of Jefferson, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester after an extended illness. Born in Worcester, Jim was the son of the late Emmett R. and Edith C. (Gain) Dickman and lived most of his life in Jefferson.
Jim graduated from Wachusett Regional High School in 1965 and from Bridgewater State College in 1969. He taught science at Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School until being drafted into the United States Army in 1970. He honorably served his country in Vietnam as a US Army Ranger in Company H, 75th Infantry (Airborne). As a Ranger his mission was to infiltrate enemy territory as part of a six-man team in order to gather intelligence to assist ground troops. After returning from Vietnam, Jim attended Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, earning a degree in Building Construction Technology. Jim was a self-employed carpenter working primarily in Jefferson and Holden for over forty years through his own business, Jim Dickman Carpenter-Builder.
He leaves his wife of 36 years, Paula E. Alberghini; his children, Daniel H. Dickman and Julia L. Dickman both of Jefferson; aunts and cousins; a niece and nephew; and a large extended family of in-laws. He is predeceased by a brother, Emmett "Jack" L. Dickman.
Jim loved to ski and sail, but most of all he loved being a father who was justly proud of his children and loved spending time with them. He will be remembered as a kind, gentle man of uncommon strength who had a passion for excellence.
Jim's family will honor his life at a private remembrance at a later date. Memorial donations in Jim’s name may be made to Catalyst Foundation, 2016 Vietnam Aid Expedition, PO Box 13, Northfield, MN 55057.
